When is the right time for an MBA?

An MBA is a great tool to advance one’s career, take the step into executive level, change industries and/or teach business knowledge to specialists from healthcare to engineering. As with most things in life these career transitions need planning and the right timing. So when is the right time to pursue an MBA?

There are definitely several stages in your life when an MBA would and could make sense: earlier on after a few years of work experience as well as getting into the height of your career when pursuing an executive MBA. Some points are worthwhile considering at any stage though:

You will need at least some work experience on your back to be able to get the most out of the degree. Otherwise you won’t be able to relate to real world business problems as well or contribute practical knowledge and real-life problems in the classroom. It is the interaction of people from different industries, levels and nationalities that makes part of the learning.

It will also be easier for you to understand the course content coming from a work environment. The earlier you try to apply for an MBA, the more competitive it is. You need excellent academic results, internships and leadership experience to even score a place. So it usually is a good idea to have at least 2 to 3 years of work experience before you apply.

If you add the work experience to your resume, admission consultants won’t judge you as harshly on your academic results anymore, particularly if you have a strong GMAT result. Having a few years of work experience on top of your education will also cement your intentions and help you to be sure about your career choices before spending so much money on a degree.

And last but not least: It also helps if there are career opportunities dangling in front of you. You might capitalize on the expensive degree much faster.
