Talent is the new capital

The era of capitalism may be ending, reckons Klaus Schwab, founder of The World Economic Forum. He believes “capital is being superseded by creativity and the ability to innovate. Talentism is the new capitalism.

These statements, quoted by the Wall Street Journal, created a lively debate in business circles, leading mostly to the conclusion: you cannot have one without the other. Claudio Fernandez-Araoz, a senior partner with the global search firm Egon Zehnder, believes that talentism might just be the wrong word, suggesting the notion ‘potential‘ instead and predicting a new era ”where managers will hire workers based on how curious, insightful, engaged and determined they are.” The business daily agrees: ”In capitalism companies acquired capital in order to acquire talent. In the coming age of talentism the model flips: firms will acquire talent to acquire capital.“
