Success: It´s the culture, stupid!

“My two cents of CEO wisdom? It’s the culture, stupid!”, writes Jost Stollmann, former CEO of Germany’s CompuNet and founder of Australia’s Tyro, a payment system company that successfully attacks the country’s four big banks and the credit card industry.

In today’s business landscape, the role of the CEO is changing dramatically – especially when it comes to company culture, is a view Stollmann shares in his personal blog. “As CEO, I’m an important influencer and, most importantly, the face and voice of this shared living and breathing culture.” But what keeps a culture thriving? Listening to each other and experimenting with ways to accelerate growth while nurturing the what should ideally be “an interrupt, speak-up, try-fail-learn-win culture”. Stollmann suggests to his fellow-CEOs to delve into the culture of different fast-growth companies: No HR department but complex data-driven hiring process and constant analysis of their people, trust rather than many management layers, a large talent pool that consistently drives quality products, a culture of helping across all seniority levels and an open approach when it comes to information. “If you implement some of these ideas, perhaps your business could be the next technology empire.”
