Marla Beck’s advice for newcomers

One of America’s most successful female CEOs, Marla Beck, shared some of her advice in a recent article in Huffington Post. The founder of Bluemercury, a luxury cosmetics retailer, ecommerce provider, and cosmetics brand developer, has an impressive CV. After a BA in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley she also graduated with an MPA from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Before starting Bluemercury, she also worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company.

We have condensed her interview for Huffington Post to her five top tips for newcomers:

1.    “Get in the game.”  Take a role, any role, in the industry and start to have impact.

2.    “Be an expert at something.” Try to become amazing at something that no one else is doing. New media is such an opportunity at many beauty companies.

3.    Figure out how to make a difference in whatever organisation you are in.

4.    “Never miss an opportunity to be fabulous.” Every day, we are given micro-opportunities. You need to show up and do great work, even for the most minor events or meetings.

5.    Break the rules. The way to disrupt and be different is to not take existing structures as a given.

And apart from the professional advice she shared some insight how you can maintain a work/life balance despite having a partner and a family (she has three children aged 13, 11, and 10). “I have an extremely clear sense of priorities and an ability to say no to things if they don’t fall within my priorities. My key priorities are family and work. At work, at any given time, I have a list of 3 things that I am working on that add real value for our customers, team members and shareholders. At home, I also have a clear sense of priorities.”
